The Community Development Department provides planning, building, engineering, maintenance and environmental services to the community.
Planning and Zoning
The Department is responsible for processing requests for new development typically referred to as current planning. The Department is also responsible for the planning, organizing and administrating all activities of long-range planning for the land use and physical development of the City (General Plan and Zoning Ordinance). Federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds are administered by the Department. These funds support housing rehabilitation and minor home repair, the Center of Independent Living residential access program, various disabled accessibility projects and public improvements.
This Department provides the staff and administration for the Planning and Zoning Commission, Traffic and Safety Commission, and the Waterfront Committee.

Public Works
Public Works functions for the City include improvements to streets, sewers, and storm drains, repair and maintenance of City infrastructure, street cleaning and sweeping, and installation and maintenance of street signs. With attention to aesthetics, department personnel also maintain the landscaping of City facilities and parks. These functions help provide the community with clean, safe, full-service neighborhoods.
