Albany's City Council will be considering proposals to upgrade existing ordinances to restrict smoking in a variety of public locations. Cities throughout the Bay Area and the nation have been upgrading their laws to restrict smoking in a variety of public spaces, including bus stops, parks, commercial shopping districts, adjacent to schools, etc.

Staff recommendation: Direct the City Attorney to draft an ordinance, which includes provisions to 1) update or replace the City's existing smoking regulation ordinance to be in compliance with State law; and 2) add a variety of provisions to prohibit smoking in public places, per the SEJC recommendations at their February 13, 2008 meeting.
