City of Albany ranked as California’s “Greenest” City
The City of Albany consists of a green-minded, environmentally conscious community, as recently made evident by a study conducted at UCLA. The report, "Green Market Geography," authored by Matthew Kahn and Ryan Vaughn, ranks Albany as California's "greenest" city.
The authors conducted analysis of political data comparing California cities' voting records on environmental issues, identifying areas with high concentrations of green voters. They then conducted further research to determine the number of environmentally preferable vehicles and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design buildings (LEED buildings) within cities to identify areas leading the way in environmental stewardship.
The City has worked hard to promote a “Green” Albany. The “All-in-one-Recycling” and “All-in-one-Organics” collection services allow the community to recycle everything from cans and bottles to plastics, plastic bags, mixed paper and cardboard to name just a few. Additionally, organics service includes collection of food scraps and food-contaminated paper, which further helps minimze the amount of material headed to our landfill. Many other environmental programs are in place, including a climate action planning process to minimize the amount of greenhouse gas emissions within the city, youth environmental education programs, and volunteer environmental cleanup events such as coastal cleanup day.
