The City of Albany Recreation & Community Services Department is offering online classes for both youth and adults to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. We will update this page regularly with new programs so check back frequently or get regular updates on our social media pages.

YOUTH PROGRAMS

Friendship Club 

1st - 3rd Grade

The Friendship Club is not offering in-person programing at this time, but please join us for a new online approach to after school time for kids! The program is an online, interactive class where friends can connect with each other in the comfort of their home. Each class has an activity led by the fabulous and dynamic Friendship Club Coordinator, Danielle Brownlie, with limited supplies needed…you only need to bring your creativity!

Scavenger hunt, storytelling, show and tell, Pictionary, and mystery challenges.


Online Adobe Premier and After Effects Connection
Day: Thursday

Want a crash course in Adobe Premiere and After Effects? Want to learn how they can work together for film and motion graphics production? This online course will cover the essentials of both software packages focusing on film editing and motion graphics, while answering your direct questions about your own projects. Tutorials will be provided but the emphasis will be on understanding key fundamentals and providing feedback on best practices. Find out more on NarrativeArtCenter.com. We have taken the weekly Yoga in the Park class online so you can continue your practice while sheltering in place. With all the uncertainty in the air, it's even more important that we don't give up our practice and take time to breathe and care for ourselves. Whether you are indoors or able to find a nice patch of grass or sun, you will still get to take the dedicated hour to move and breathe with the support of our Yoga in the Park community.

This class provides a gentler approach to the practice of Yoga. Enjoy the benefits of increased flexibility, strength and stamina. Yoga encourages better posture, improves digestions, relaxes and calms the mind. Class is suitable for all levels. Wear loose and comfortable clothing and practice on an empty stomach.

 


Sumi-e/Japanese Brush Painting

This course is for all levels, will encourage and motivate those who have never painted, as well as those who wish to take full advantage of the medium’s potential of sumi-e/ink brush painting and refine techniques.
This course will cover the use of paper, ink and brush. Through step by step practices of calligraphy and some seasonal sumi -e paintings, class will learn most essential strokes and techniques to paint a fine brush painting.  Class will also learn how to complete a sumi -e to display. Individual help/ consultations will be available during each class. Advanced students may work on individual projects.
Sumi-e is the unique form of Asian art that has produced some of the world’s finest masterpieces of ink painting. Originating in China and having its spiritual basis in Zen Buddhism, this form of expressing nature’s colors through shades of black ink with or without colors, has been popular in East Asia for many centuries and now practiced all over the world.
